Traveling with a dog in an RV is one of the most natural arrangements in RVing โ dogs are good at small spaces, good at routines, and very good at alerting you to wildlife at 2 a.m. What they are not good at is being turned away at the campground entrance because the breed is on a restriction list, the park has a per-site weight limit, or there is simply no outdoor space suitable for a large dog. That scenario is more common than it should be, and it is entirely avoidable with a single call before you book.

The nine parks in this guide all have accept pets as a general policy โ this does not guarantee all breeds are welcome, all sizes are accepted, or that the park has off-leash amenities. The checklist below covers what to ask. The parks that follow are selected from the highest-rated pet-friendly options across nine states on RVSpot.

Before You Book with a Pet: Five Questions to Ask
Confirming a park is pet-friendly opens the door. These five questions cover what it leaves unanswered.
1. Breed Restrictions
Most breed restrictions in RV parks are insurance-driven rather than management preference. Commonly restricted breeds include pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, German Shepherds, Chow Chows, and Akitas โ though lists vary by park and by the park's underlying liability carrier. Mixed breeds are often judged on appearance. If your dog is a restricted breed or looks like one, this is the first question you ask, before you discuss dates or rates. It is far easier to ask over the phone than to discover the policy at check-in.
2. Size and Weight Limits
Weight limits are common in resort-style parks, typically in the 25โ50 lb range per pet. Some parks with weight limits have no issue with two small dogs but will not accommodate a single large one. Others set no weight limit but cap the number of pets per site at one or two. Know your dog's weight and your total pet count before calling, and ask whether the limit applies per-pet or per-site.
3. Leash Rules and Off-Leash Areas
The overwhelming majority of RV parks require pets to be on a leash no longer than 6 feet whenever outside the RV. Some require leashes even within your own site boundaries. A smaller number of parks have a fenced dog run or designated off-leash area. Off-leash area data is not listed for the parks in this guide, so ask specifically: "Is there a fenced off-leash area? What is its size and surface type?" Parks that have invested in off-leash infrastructure generally know it and say so immediately.
4. Pet Fees
Pet fees are not standardized. Most parks charge between $2 and $10 per pet per night, sometimes with a per-stay cap for longer visits. Some parks include one pet at no charge and fee only additional animals. Resorts and full-hookup parks tend toward the higher end of the range. Ask upfront โ a surprise fee at checkout is avoidable, and some parks will apply it retroactively if not discussed at check-in.
5. Where Pets Are Allowed on the Property
Some parks allow leashed pets everywhere, including the pool area perimeter, common lawns, and amenity zones. Others restrict pets to RV sites and designated pet-walking paths. If you and your dog are used to moving around together during the day, ask about specific areas: pool surround, laundry buildings, office area, common pavilions. Knowing the restrictions ahead of time prevents awkward on-site conversations and keeps you in compliance with park rules.
